Water Mill: Quaint Hamptons Hamlet, Home to the Rich and Famous

On the south shore of Long Island, in the center of the prestigious Hamptons, sits Water Mill, an exclusive and historic hamlet. Located about halfway between the communities of Southampton and Bridgehampton, Water Mill has a population of about 1,800. It is home to the only South Fork community with a functioning Water Mill and windmill.

History of Water Mill

The area known as Water Mill was first settled in 1644, when a man named Edward Howell was granted 40 acres of land from England. The land was used to build a mill for settlers to grind their grain into meal. The mill became a local landmark, and soon people began referring to other settlements in the area as "east or west of water mill."

Expensive Zip Code

In 2006, Water Mill was listed by Forbes Magazine as the sixth most expensive zip code in the United States, with a median home price of $2.1 million. Nearby city Sagaponack topped the list, with a $2.8 million median price.
