Wainscott: Charming, Exclusive Hamlet in the Hamptons

WainscottWainscott is a small, affluent community with a population of just over 600 residents located in the town of East Hampton, New York. The charming hamlet is one of the most desirable areas of the Hamptons. Named for an area of England that was made famous in the Charles Dickens' classic novel "Great Expectations," Wainscott is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the country. The community is bordered on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the village of Sagaponack and on the east by the village of East Hampton. Most area residents are of either German or Irish descent.

Education in Wainscott

Wainscott is home to a highly educated and affluent populous. The following statistics reflect the educational achievements of area residents age 25 and older.

  • 39 percent have a bachelor's or advanced college degree
  • Over 93 percent have a high school diploma or higher
  • 19 percent have a graduate or professional degree

Wainscott Demographics

As of the 2000 United States census, there were 628 people in 152 families residing in the Wainscott. The population density was 92.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the community was 90.45% White, 4.14% African American, 0.32% Asian, 1.91% from other races, and 3.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race comprised 7.01% of the population.

There were 260 households out of which 22.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.82.

The population of the hamlet was spread out with 18.6% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.0 males.

The median income for a household in Wainscott was $55,714, and the median income for a family was $52,250. Males had a median income of $46,250 versus $41,458 for females. The per capita income for the region was $34,058. About 2.0% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 5.5% of those age 65 or over.
