SpringsSprings: Historic Artists Hamlet on Long Island's South Shore

Springs is a charming, tight-knit hamlet located in the Town of East Hampton on the exclusive South Shore of Long Island. With a population of about 4,950, Springs has a history as being home to some of the most influential artists as well as some of the world's most valuable residential real estate.

The Cradle of the Abstract Expressionist Movement

Springs is renowned in fine arts circles as the birthplace of an influence style of art performed by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, John Ferren, and Randy Rosenthal. Also, famed writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, Joseph Heller, Philip Roth, Nora Ephron, and John Steinbeck have worked in the hamlet.

Pollack, whose paintings have a distinctive style that make them among the most prized pieces in art, is synonymous with Springs. The artist created his art in the hamlet and died there in 1956 in a tragic car accident on Springs-Fireplace Road. Pollack and his wife, Lee Krasner, are buried in Green River Cemetery in Springs, which remains a popular stop for visitors.

The house where Pollock and Krasner lived and created their art on Springs-Fireplace Road is now owned by State University of New York at Stony Brook. The residence is open to the public for tours, where visitors can see the studio shed where Pollack splattered paint onto large canvases laying on the ground to create his distinctive art.
