Sagaponack: New City is Home to Nation's Most Expensive Real Estate

SagaponackSagaponack is a small seaside village nestled in the town of Southampton along the south shore of Long Island. The community was incorporated as a city in 2005. As of the 2000 United States Census, the population of Sagaponack was 582. The area now known as Sagaponack covers just over six square miles and was once home to famed American writer Truman Capote.

Josiah Stanborough is credited as being the settler of Sagaponack. The name Sagaponack is derived from the Shinnecock Indian word for "land of the big ground nuts," a reference to potatoes that were farmed in the area well into the 1900s.

Incorporated as a City

The village of Sagaponack became a city on September 2, 2005, after a failed and contentious attempt by a proposed neighboring community called Dunehampton to take over Sagaponack. Residents of Sagaponack voted to become a city, in part to preserve their access to beaches in the area. In the end, the proposed community of Dunehampton was not allowed to incorporate the city of Sagaponack.

Most Expensive Zip Code in U.S.

In 2006, Forbes Magazine named Sagaponack's zip code (11962) as the most expensive zip code in the United States, based on the median home price of $2.7 million. The nation's largest privately owned home - more than 110,000 square feet - is owned by New York billionaire Ira Rennert in Sagaponack.
