Incorporated as a City The village of Sagaponack became a city on September 2, 2005, after a failed and contentious attempt by a proposed neighboring community called Dunehampton to take over Sagaponack. Residents of Sagaponack voted to become a city, in part to preserve their access to beaches in the area. In the end, the proposed community of Dunehampton was not allowed to incorporate the city of Sagaponack.
