Montauk: Historic Beach Resort at the Tip of Long Island

MontaukPerched at the eastern tip on the south shore of New York's Long Island, Montauk is an exclusive, historic resort hamlet that welcomes residents and visitors from around the world. The community is well known as a center of ocean fishing (home to the largest fleet of ships in the state), tourism, and surfing.

The hamlet has a population of about 3,800 residents and also is home to six New York state parks, which afford residents and visitors ample camping, hiking and other outdoor opportunities.

Montauk Early History

Montauk was named for the Montaukett tribe of American Indians who lived in the area long before European explorers arrived in the early 1600s. Dutch explorer Adriaen Block was the first to encounter the tribe at what is now called Montauk Point.

In the mid-1600s, the area that is now Montauk was purchased from the tribe and eventually became part of New York State. In 1699, famed pirate Captain Kidd is said to have buried treasure at the tip of the town in what is now called Money Ponds.

Montauk Today

With soft, wide, white-sand beaches and dramatic pounding surf, the ocean is a centerpiece of life in Montauk. Surfing, whale watching, fishing, hiking and countless other outdoor activities remain popular pursuits in the town.
