Early East Hampton HistoryThe first documented residents of East Hampton were the Montauket Indians, who at the time inhabited most of Long Island. The first European settlers arrived in 1648. The settlers, English Puritans who had immigrated to America in the early 1600s, named the town Maidstone after their original home near Kent, England. The town, later renamed East Hampton, became a province of New York in 1664. East Hampton TodayMore than 350 years after it was founded, East Hampton retains much of its Old English charm.
