East Hampton: Fabulous Playground to the Rich and Famous

East Hampton NYEast Hampton is an exclusive enclave located on the southern coast at the tip of Long Island. The community has a long and storied history as home to some of the best known and wealthiest Americans, from former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (who was born there), to former President Bill Clinton (who spent summers there), and painter Sidney Pollock, who created some of his most influential works of art in East Hampton.

The town of East Hampton has a population of about 20,000 and is made up of the ultra-exclusive village of East Hampton (population 1,300) as well as the surrounding hamlets of Montauk, Amagansett, Wainscott, and Springs. Each area maintains its own distinctive character, charm, and appeal.

Early East Hampton History

The first documented residents of East Hampton were the Montauket Indians, who at the time inhabited most of Long Island. The first European settlers arrived in 1648. The settlers, English Puritans who had immigrated to America in the early 1600s, named the town Maidstone after their original home near Kent, England. The town, later renamed East Hampton, became a province of New York in 1664.

East Hampton Today

More than 350 years after it was founded, East Hampton retains much of its Old English charm. The town's quaint Main Street is shaded by towering Elm trees and 18th Century homes distinguished with grey-shingled roofs and situated along picturesque sand dunes lining the coast.

The town of East Hampton and the surrounding hamlets remain among the most exclusive communities in the nation. Many celebrities and the wealthiest families in New York, Connecticut and the Northeast own vacation or year-round properties in East Hampton, making the town a much sought-after address.

East Hampton Schools

There are three high schools and several middle schools in East Hampton serving students from the region.

East Hampton High School is the primary high school for the town. The school also serves the hamlet of Springs (which has its own elementary school) and Montauk (which has an elementary and middle school). East Hampton High serves grades 9-12 and has an enrollment of about 1,046.

Pierson Middle High School is attended by students in grades 6-12, and while located in East Hampton, the school also educates students from nearby Sag Harbor. The school has about 500 students.
The Ross School is the largest private school in the Hamptons and has campuses in East Hampton and Bridgehampton. The Ross School serves students in grades 4-12 and has an enrollment of about 300 students.
