Bridgehampton: Charming Hamlet Set Among Nature Preserves, Golf Courses and More

The community of Bridgehampton is a charming hamlet perfectly situated in the town of Southampton along the South Fork of Suffolk County in the ultra-exclusive Hamptons. With a population of about 1,400 and easy access to some of the region's best beaches, nature preserves, and golf courses, Bridgehampton is a much sought-after address.

Bridgehampton History

Bridgehampton's first inhabitants were the Shinnecock Indians, who for generations had lived throughout the region of what would become the state of New York. In the mid-1600s, as more and more European settlers started arriving in the Long Island region, a community was set up along the shores of Sagg Pond, a body of water that was built in 1686 by a local settler named Ezekiel Sandford. The settlement, first called Bullhead, later became known as Bridgehampton after a bridge spanning Sagg Pond was built by settlers.

Modern Bridgehampton

Today, Bridgehampton is a vibrant, wealthy hamlet that is a common vacation destination and year-round community for some of the wealthiest Americans. Actress and television talk show host Kelly Ripa, former Union Carbide CEO Warren Anderson, and other notable residents call the community home.

Bridgehampton also has a long history of fielding successful sports teams. Bridgehampton High School has earned numerous New York state championships in various sports and former Boston Red Sox great and Hall of Fame baseball player Karl Yastrzemski is a native of the town.
