Amagansett: Historic Hamlet on the South Shore of Long Island Amagansett BeachesWith a prime, oceanfront location near the tip of Long Island, much of the appeal of Amagansett is owed to the area's pristine beaches. With soft, white sand and rugged landscapes, the beaches in Amagansett are picture post card quality scenes. In the summer months, the beaches and ocean play a central part in the social scene of the area, with many beach parties hosted. One area beach, Indian Wells, is private and open only to East Hampton Town residents. Sitting at the foot of Indian Wells Highway, the popular beach has a snack stand, surfing area and public restrooms. Other beaches in the area - Atlantic Avenue Beach and Kirk Park -- are open to all who have seasonal parking permits, which cost $10, but are free for residents. Another popular beach in Amagansett is Big Albert's Landing Beach, which is located at the end of Albert's Landing Road off Old Stone Highway and is favored for its family picnic area. Amagansett NightlifeParticularly in the summer months when seasonal vacationers flood the south shore of Long Island, Amagansett bustles with a lively and youthful nightlife. After dark, Main Street through Amagansett teems with the sights and sounds of summer. Perhaps the best known nightspot in Amagansett is Stephen Talkhouse, a local bar that has evolved into a beloved institution revered for its funky, offbeat interior and popular outdoor patio. Over the years, Long Island residents and famed musicians Billy Joel and Paul Simon have performed there to the thrill of visitors. Amagansett DemographicsAmagansett had a population of 1,067 people, as of the 2000 United States Census. The racial makeup of the hamlet was 96.44% White, 1.69% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.28% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race accounted for 4.03% of the population. There were 493 households in Amagansett, out of which 21.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.0% were non-families. 34.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.78. The age of Amagansett residents ran the gamut, with 19.1% under the age of 18, 3.2% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 33.0% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. |
